Offense keeps pressure on as CMS defeats Southwestern 2-0 in season-opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Sophomore Makella Brems and senior Ashley Barnhill each scored a goal in the second half as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team defeated Southwestern (Texas) 2-0 on Aug. 29 at Cal Lutheran's William Rolland Stadium in the inaugural Best Western Thousand Oaks Inn Classic. CMS' season started Friday in the same location where it had ended nearly 10 months earlier with a 2-0 loss to Hardin-Simmons in the opening round of the NCAA Championships at Cal Lutheran back in November.

Against Southwestern however, despite being unable to score in the first half, CMS controlled the tempo and the ball throughout the match. The Athenas defense held Southwestern without a shot for the entire match while CMS' offense got off 26 shots with 10 on goal.

In the first half, Southwestern goalie Kylie Hunt came up with five saves as CMS outshot Southwestern 15-0.

Just under 10 minutes into the second half, Brems broke the scoreless streak for CMS with an unassisted goal in the 54th minute. 20 minutes later, CMS added its second goal as Barnhill scored off an assist from freshman F Natalie Ricci who crossed the ball in from the right wing for her first-career assist.

CMS is back in action on Aug. 31 against Pacific Lutheran at Cal Lutheran, for the team's second match of the Best Western Thousand Oaks Classic.
