CMS Loses Close One To #4 Wheaton

The women's soccer team traveled to Wheaton, IL to open their 2012 season #4 Wheaton College. The Athenas came out strong and found the net early on a great through pass to senior captain Madi Shove to go ahead 1-0. The game was a great battle back and forth on a hot and humid afternoon. The score remained 1-0 at half.

The Athenas continued to fight strong creating a few chances early in the second half, but Wheaton never gave up. They pounded the CMS goal, but the defense, led by center backs Sara Tweedy and Sam Kunz and keeper Molly Freed, held strong.  Late in the half, the equalizer was scored on a long shot/cross from the right hand side. CMS stormed back trying to get the game winner, but in the 89th minute went down 2-1 on a hectic play in front of the CMS goal. A short range shot was fired and saved, the rebound hit the crossbar and deflected off a retreating CMS defender and into the net. It was an exciting match and an unfortunate loss.

The Athenas look to rebound tomorrow morning when they play UW-La Crosse at Wheaton at 11:30 Central.
