Athenas Soccer Falls In Final SCIAC Game, Still Earns Hosting Rights To SCIAC Tourney

CMS Women's soccer played their last SCIAC regular season match Wednesday night out at Redlands.  CMS was hoping for the win to ensure a first round home SCIAC tournament game.  Redlands was battling for the last spot in the tournament.  Both teams came out with energy and created scoring opportunities.  Redlands struck first in the 9th minute when a high cross was sent into the CMS box just over the hand of Fr. keeper Molly Freed and knocked in by Samantha Rivera of Redlands.  CMS worked hard to get the goal back and thought they equalized on a nice run out of the back by Sr. Julia Nishioka on a pass to So. Kerry Moller, but the goal was called back for offsides.  Half time ended 1-0 Redlands.

The second half saw tensions rise as both teams fought hard.  CMS earned a pk in the 50th minute and Nishioka tallied the score to tie the game at 1-1.  CMS created a few more chances right away but could not put the go ahead goal in the net and Redlands scored in the 53rd minute off of a shot that was deflected off a CMS defender into the cross bar, where a Redlands player headed in the rebound.  The Athenas pressed once again to tie the game, but unfortunately, Redlands scored again in the 69th minute on a run in behind the CMS defense to go up 3-1.

The Athenas never gave up.  They were shooting until the end, but could not find another goal and Redlands did well killing the clock and the game ended 1-3 Redlands.  Fortunately for the Athenas, Cal Lu beat Pomona-Pitzer in OT to give CMS hosting rights to one of the first round SCIAC tournament games.  So, your Athenas play once more at home next Thursday night at 7:00pm.
