Athenas Fall Just Short Against First Place Regals

The women's soccer team traveled to Cal Lutheran on Saturday to take on the first place and 17th-ranked Regals.  The Athenas came out with renewed energy and desire following a couple of one goal losses.  CMS controlled much of the first half, winning balls in the air and possessing in their offensive half.  Despite the incredible pressure, Cal Lu scored first when in the 31st minute they earned a corner kick on a quick transition.  The initial kick was cleared, but not far and Cal Lu shot it back on goal.  CMS keeper Hannah Dunham made the save, but her punch found the foot of a Cal Lu forward who rifled her shot right back and to the top of the CMS net.  The Athenas continued to battle creating a few more chances before half, but the score remained 1-0 at half.

CMS continued to battle and put Cal Lu under pressure in the 2nd half.  There were several dangerous counters, but unfortunately, no goals to show for the tremendous effort put forth by the CMS team.  Despite a few last minute drives at goal and a fourth forward, CMS could not even the score and lost 1-0.  The loss put the Athenas 4-3 (t2nd) in SCIAC play.

CMS next plays at home Wednesday night at 7:00 against Occidental.  CMS won the first meeting at Occidental 2-0 on September 17.
