Women's Soccer Beat Cross-Street Rivals 3-1

The women's soccer team scored two early goals and then held on for a 3-1 win at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday afternoon. Annie Belanger started off the scoring just six minutes into the match.  The play started with Lauren Allen finding Scooby Phillips on the right side.  Phillips drove to the end line and cut a ball back.  Belanger just got a toe on the ball and was able to beat the Sagehen keeper for the first goal against Pomona-Pitzer in the run of play this year.  Just a short time later, Madi Shove (pictured) was sent a perfect pass from Rosa Ahn that put her in behind the defense and one v. one with the keeper.  With great composure, Shove finished with the second goal of the game.  The momentum then shifted as the Sagehens put a lot of pressure on the Athenas.  There were many near misses, but Athena keeper Hannah Dunham held firm to keep the halftime score 2-0.

The Sagehens continued to pressure the Athenas in the second half.  The CMS team struggled to find a rhythm and Pomona-Pitzer created several chances eventually out shooting the Athenas 18-10.  The Sagehens finally broke through the CMS defense with about 15 minutes to go in the game on a crossing ball that found a player open on the back post.  With the score 2-1, CMS finally found some control of the ball and with five minutes to go in the game, Kerry Moller found herself in behind the Sagehen defense.  As she dribbled, their defense recovered, but she still managed to get through them and get a shot off that went inside the near post to make the final score 3-1.

CMS next travels to Westmont College this Friday for a 3:30 game and then to Whittier on Saturday for a 7:00 contest.
