CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team was tied with No. 13 Williams at the half, but the Ephs scored the first five goals after intermission and went on to take a 13-9 win over the Athenas on Monday evening at Zinda Field.
With the loss, CMS slips to 5-2 on the year, while Williams improves its record to 5-1. Amelia Ulmer led the Athenas with three goals and an assist, while Avery Monahan had two goals and an assist.
The Williams run was actually 7-0 spanning both halves after Monahan had her two goals back-to-back to give CMS a 6-4 lead with 10:56 left in the half. Williams closed out with two goals to tie the score 6-6 head into intermission, and the started the second half on a 5-0 run, before Ulmer ended it with a goal of a free position shot with 2:30 left in the third to make the score 11-7.
Grace Minturn had a free position goal with 6:01 to play to close the gap to 12-8, but that was as close as the Athenas could come down the stretch.
CMS answered Williams goals four straight times to start the game, with Julia Ryan tying it 1-1 on a day in which she had 11 draw controls. Catherine Murphy tied it 2-2, Ulmer tied it 3-3, and Cate Lewison made it 4-4 on a free position shot, before Monahan had back-to-back goals to give CMS a 6-4 advantage.
Audrey Donahue, Paige Morgan, Stella Hansot and Ali McEachern each had two caused turnovers defensively, while Kendall Chapko had 11 saves and Lewison added five ground balls. Claudia Russell led all scorers with four goals for Williams.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to Redlands for a 7 p.m. contest.
