CMS Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Occidental for 19-6 SCIAC Win

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and went on to capture a 19-6 win over Occidental on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, CMS moves to 4-1 overall on the season and 3-1 in the SCIAC, while Occidental slips to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in league play. Cate Lewison and Catherine Murphy each scored four goals while Taylor Daetz had three goals and two assists. 

Daetz had two goals and an assist in the opening 6-0 run, scoring the game's first goal and then feeding Lewison for a goal 40 seconds later. Lewison scored her second to make it 3-0, and Natalie Teare, Daetz and Murphy all added tallied to put CMS ahead 6-0 just over 10 minutes into the contest. 

After Occidental broke the ice with its first goal, Murphy answered with a free position goal, and Lewison capped off the opening stanza with her third goal of the game to give CMS an 8-1 lead heading into the second quarter. 

Lily Bishop and Maggie Griffis opened the second quarter with goals, and Murphy finished off a hat trick to stretch the lead to 10 and enfore the running clock with 10:16 still to play in the second quarter. Sarah Press added a goal with 6:49 left in the half, Bishop scored her second and Kelsey Heffernan tallied one with 14 seconds left to give CMS a 14-1 lead going into halftime. 

Occidental scored the first two goals of the second half, but Heffernan broke the run with her second. Amelia Ulmer added a late goal for CMS to break into the scoring column. 

CMS will be back in action after spring break when it hosts Chapman on Saturday, March 23 for an 11 a.m. contest.
