CLAREMONT, Calif. - Cate Lewison and Catherine Murphy each had hat tricks as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned a 16-6 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Thursday evening at Zinda Field.
The game was shortened to three quarters before it started, after a lightning delay that lasted over two hours. RPI, which fell to Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday 11-7 on its two-game trip, had flights bak to New York on Thursday evening.
CMS improves to 3-1 with the win, while RPI sees its record slip to 1-2.
Grace Minturn, Amelia Ulmer, Paige Morgan and Taylor Daetz each added two goals for the Athenas. Morgan and Julia Ryan each had six draw controls, while Lewison had five ground balls and Natalie Teare added four.
CMS trailed 2-1 early but used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 5-2 late in the first quarter. Lewison had the first and last goals of the run, sandwiched around goals from Morgan and Murphy.
The Engineers closed to within 5-3 at the end of the first quarter, but CMS scored the next five goals in succession, from five different players, to pull away. Murphy and Minturn capped off the run with goals 19 seconds apart to make the score 10-3.
CMS finished the game with a 33-13 edge in shots and a 17-8 advantage in draw controls.
The Athenas will be back in action on Sunday when it returns to SCIAC play for a road game at Occidental.
