CMS Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Short 15-10 in Sixth Street Rivalry Game

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team fell in a quick 5-0 hole and played evenly the rest of the way with No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer, but finished on the short end of a 15-10 final on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field.

CMS suffers its first loss of the season as it slips to 2-1 overall, all in league games, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Amelia Ulmer led CMS offensively with four goals, while Julia Ryan had 13 draw controls. Kendall Chapko had 12 saves, including several tough ones to help the Athenas settle in after a slow start.

The Sagehens took a 5-0 lead before the game was five minutes old, with Fiona Lewis scoring her second with 10:14 left in the first. That was their last goal of the first quarter, though, as Chapko made five saves to keep CMS in striking distance. Grace Minturn was able to get CMS on the board with a free position shot with 5:37 left.

After the Sagehens went back up 7-1, Ulmer and Annie Parizeau scored consecutive goals to get CMS back within 7-3, before the Sagehens restored their five-goal lead at the half, 8-3.

The Athenas had three straight goals in the second half to pull within 11-7, as Parizeau closed out the third quarter with her second, and Ulmer and Ryan opened the fourth quarter with tallies to get CMS within four with 12:48 to play. Pomona-Pitzer bounced back with a 3-0 run, though, to put the game away. Hannah Conte scored twice in the fourth quarter and assisted on the final goal from Ulmer.

CMS will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts RPI for an 4:30 p.m. contest.
