CMS Women's Lacrosse Opens With Dominant Win Over Cal Lutheran



CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team opened its 2024 season in dominant fashion, taking a 23-1 win over Cal Lutheran on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field.

Bella Lynch had three goals and three assists, and Cate Lewison and Hannah Conte each had four goals and an assist to lead the Athenas offensively, while Julia Ryan had 12 draw controls in her collegiate debut. Grace Minturn had two goals and two assists, and led CMS with four caused turnovers and five ground balls, while while Catherine Murphy and Amelia Ulmer each added two goals and two assists as well. 

CMS held a 46-3 advantage in shots, while Bella Bravo made 16 saves in the Cal Lutheran cage. 

Conte got the goal-scoring started 42 seconds in, when she scored a behind-the-back goal from the left side of the net. Lewison, Murphy, Paige Morgan and Ryan scored the next four, before Lewison became the first two-goal scorer for the Athenas. Minturn then tallied her first, before Conte and Murphy tallied the next two, and Conte finished off a first-quarter hat trick with 5:52 left to make it a 10-0 lead less than 10 minutes in.

Lewison scored her third to finish off the first quarter scoring, and the Athenas got goals from Lynch and Lily Bishop to take a 13-1 lead into the half. 

Sheridan Dorsey and Taylor Daetz joined the goal-scoring club in the second half, as CMS ended with 11 different players finding the net. 

The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Whittier for another SCIAC contest.
