CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team honored its five seniors prior to the contest, and had No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer deadlocked at 9-9 early in the second half, but the Sagehens were able to pull away for a 22-14 win on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field.
With the loss, CMS falls to 8-4 overall and 7-2 in conference play, with all four losses coming to team currently in the national top 20 (Wesleyan, Chicago, Pomona-Pitzer). The Sagehens move to 14-1 overall and 11-0 in SCIAC with the win.
Seniors Abby Parrish, Emme McMullen, Bella Godes, Grace Johnson and Sammie Cohen were honored prior to the contest for their final regular season weekend home game. They will have two more home contests, including a Wednesday night home game with Chapman and a SCIAC Semifinal game next Wednesday.
Grace Minturn closed out the half with a free position goal with eight seconds left to make the score 9-8, and the Athenas carried that momentum into the second half, as Kendall Chapko had a point-blank save that led to a transition goal from Emma Merk to tie the score 9-9.
However, the Sagehens caught fire with six unanswered goals to seize the momentum. Minturn stopped the run with another free position goal, but Pomona-Pitzer scored the final three goals of the third to take an 18-10 lead heading into the fourth.
Merk had three goals to lead CMS, while McMullen, Minturn, Taylor Daetz and Bella Lynch each had two. Chapko had seven first-half saves for the Athenas (nine overall) to help keep the game close.
CMS will be back in action on Monday night, when it makes up a suspended game at Cal Lutheran, before returning home to face Chapman on Wednesday.
