Carey, Futterman, McMullen Earn IWLCA First-Team All-Region Honors

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Olivia Carey, Alex Futterman and Emme McMullen each earned selections to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-West Region first team, the organization announced this morning.

The trio earned their honors after helping CMS to a 14-6 final record and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Athenas defeated George Fox 22-6 in the opening round, marking the program's first NCAA win since the 2011 season.

Carey, a graduate student who played at Davidson before joining CMS this year, led the Athenas in scoring with 89 points on 50 goals and 39 assists. She ended up tied for second on the program's single-season points list, nine behind the school record of 98 set by Hall of Famer Sarah Dick in 2011. The 39 assists also places her fourth on the CMS all-time list.

Ranking ninth on the single-season goals list at CMS is Futterman, who finished the year with 55 goals to lead the Athenas. She also added 25 assists for 80 points, which ranks ninth all-time at CMS, and she crossed the 100-goal mark in her career with 105 to rank tenth in program history, despite losing one entire season and most of a second due to the pandemic.

McMullen was a breakthrough player for CMS this season in the midfield position after moving up from a defender spot. She ended the year with 24 goals, including six in an overtime defeat to undefeated Pomona-Pitzer, when she twice gave CMS the lead with goals in the final minutes. A strong two-way player, she also had 27 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers.

By earning All-Region distinction, the trio is now eligible for All-America honors, which will be announced later this month.
