
CMS Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away for 25-13 Win over Occidental
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Alex Futterman had a career-high 11 points on six goals and five assists as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team broke open a 16-12 game with nine straight goals and captured a 25-13 win over Occidental on Saturday at Zinda Field.
With the win, CMS moves to 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the SCIAC with three games left to play, while Occidental slips torter 6-6 overall and 3-4 in league play with the loss.
Bella Lynch and Olivia Carey each added five goals and two assists for the Athenas, who had a season-high in goals on the day. Holly Shankle had nine saves in the second half, while Kendall Chapko had six in the first half.
CMS got off to a quick start and led 9-2 after a 5-0 run that saw two goals and an assist from Carey, as well as goals from Futterman, Lynch and Emma Merk. However, CMS couldn't put the Tigers away and settled for a 13-8 lead at the half on a goal from Lynch with 12 seconds left.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter for a little while, with Occidental closing to within 14-10, 15-11 and 16-12. Rachel Leonardi scored to make it 17-12, and the Athenas closed out the third quarter with three goals in the last 42 seconds, with Emme McMullen scoring off a Lynch feed, Carey scoring an unassisted goal, and Lynch finishing it off with a goal off a Futterman feed with two seconds left to stretch the lead to 20-12.
CMS keot the run going in the fourth quarter, with Tessa Guerra scoring once and Carey and Lynch adding two to make it a 25-12 lead, before Occidental broke the run with 20 seconds left to make the final score 25-13.
The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday night for a road game at Redlands at 7 p.m.
