Murphy and Hack Lead Rout of Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 22 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team defended their home turf with a 17-3 victory over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in the Sixth Street Rivalry on Wednesday night. Corie Hack (CMC) and Evan Murphy (CMC) each tallied four goals to lead the Athenas' offense as CMS improved their winning streak to 13 games.

The Athenas allowed just nine shots on goal in the game with Anna Gillespie (SC), the defending SCIAC Player of the Week, making six saves.

Lauren Clubb (CMC) got CMS on the board first with a goal less than five minutes into the game off a pass from Allie Hill (CMC). After scoring the first goal of the game, Clubb handed out a pair of helpers on the next two tallies. First, Clubb found Allie Hill for her 18th goal of the season before connecting with Sally Abel (CMC). Abel snuck her shot past the goalie and now leads all SCIAC freshman with 34 goals on the season.

Evan Murphy scored a pair of goals, just over a minute apart, to push the CMS lead up to 5-0. Lily Hermann then scored for Pomona-Pitzer to get the Sagehens on the board, but two more tallies from Murphy in the next five minutes allowed the Athenas to counter and take a 7-1 lead.

Kira Weiss (CMC) and Corie Hack closed out the half with goals for the Athenas to make it a 9-1 CMS advantage at the half. Weiss' unassisted goal with 7:44 remaining in the half was the first tally of her career and came on the first shot of the season for the defender. Hack's tally on the other hand, was her 39th of the season and the first of a four-goal performance for the junior on Wednesday night.

Hack scored the first goal of the second-half and connected two more times in the half. She scored her third goal of the game nine minutes into the second period and then notched her final goal of the night off a pass from Sally Carlson (CMC) in the game's final five minutes.

After Hack's first goal of the second-half, the Sagehens scored back-to-back goals to cut the CMS lead down to 10-3. Once again the Athenas responded, this time scoring the final seven goals of the contest to earn a 17-3 victory.

In addition to Weiss' first career goal, Brielle Huddy (CMC) also notched her first career tally. Huddy scored with eight minutes remaining in the game off a pass from Sally Carlson. Second-half scorers for the Athenas also included Eloise Shields (SC), Hannah Graves (CMC), and Sally Carlson.

As mentioned, Anna Gillespie was strong in goal for the Athenas. The freshman goalie compiled six saves on 14 total shots and allowed just three goals to win her ninth game of the season.

In the contest, CMS outshot the Sagehens 41-14 while also picking up 33 ground balls compared to 14 from Pomona-Pitzer.

The victory pushes the Athenas to 7-0 in the SCIAC and to 13-1 overall. CMS is undefeated against Division III foes this season and has now won 13-straight games. The Athenas will next be in action on Saturday at Redlands when they take on the Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. With a win on Saturday against Redlands, CMS locks up at least a share of the 2018 SCIAC Championship.
