Athenas and Tigers rematch set at South Athletics Complex for NCAA showdown

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team will face Colorado College at South Athletics Complex in Pomona College on Sunday, May 14 at 1 p.m. for the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Both teams earned a First Round bye and are placed in the same section of the NCAA bracket withWilliam Smith, Washington & Lee, and Washington and Jefferson College among a few others.

Admission to the game will be charged at the main entrance of the complex. Admission will cost $6 for adults, $3 for students with valid ID, and $2 for children between the ages 3-12. Parking will be available inside the structure beneath South Athletics Complex on 1st Street and Colombia Avenue as well as alongside 1st Street south of the field. Attendees are also allowed to park alongside Mills Ave. near Roberts Pavilion and walk down 6^th Street to the walking trail east of Haldeman Pool at Pomona-Pitzer.

The Athenas will be playing in their first NCAA Tournament since 2011 after going undefeated in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and postseason. The team currently holds a 16-1 record, with the sole loss coming against Tufts back on March 15. Junior Katie Hill (CMC) has served as the backbone of the Athenas' defense and midfield, winning SCIAC Defensive Player of the Year and helping the Athenas allow only 5.00 goals per game. Sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) and freshman Emily Cohen (CMC) have shouldered most of the scoring load, combining for 86 goals this season, while junior Lauren Clubb (CMC) has served as the catalyst on the attack with her team-leading 24 assists.

Colorado College qualified for the tournament with an at-large bid, finishing the regular season with a 14-4 record. The Tigers have faced two schools that qualified for the tournament during the regular season; CMS and Colby College, losing to both. The team finished the season on six straight road games, and won the last two games of the regular season in convincing fashion. Steph Kelly has been on the forefront of the Tigers' offense, setting the program's single season records for points (104) and assists (54) and winning the Women's Independent Lacrosse Schools' Player of the Year. Annie DeFrino has also been a star on the offensive end, leading the Tigers with 67 goals this season. On the defensive side, Mary Taussig has provided steady protection near the net, leading the Tigers with 38 caused turnovers and 51 ground balls while four-year starter Abbe Awabini caused 19 turnovers and collected 25 groundballs.

The two teams have already met earlier this season back on April 1. Playing on Zinda Field, the two teams were fairly close for majority of the game until the Athenas managed to pull away in the final 10 minutes to win 15-11. Cohen and Clubb co-led the Athenas with four goals each while junior Evan Murphy (CMC) added three goals and caused six turnovers. Kelly notched four goals for the Tigers while Taussig added three more and goalie Remy Wells did her best to contain the Athenas offense with 14 saves at the net.
