Cheng, Jun, Lu Earn Second-Team All-SCIAC Honors for CMS Women's Golf
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Stella Cheng, Irene Jun and Grace Lu each earned second-team All-SCIAC accolades in a vote of the conference's head coaches, the league office announced today.
Cheng had four first-place finishes in a stellar rookie season with the Athenas, including the first two events she competed in during the fall. She took individual medalist honors at the Redlands Fall Shootout with a 70-69-139 to come in at five-under par, and then had a 68 in a dual with Chapman. In the spring, she tied with teammate Jeissy Lee for individual medalist honors at the first SCIAC regular season tournament, and then shot a 143 to take first place at the Redlands Bulldog Classic. She added a 13th place finish at the SCIAC Championships from April 24-26.
Jun had top-seven finishes in her first four collegiate events, coming in third place at the Redlands Fall Shootout, including a 69 in her first collegiate round, and finishing first in a dual with La Verne with a 73. She added a third-place finish at the first SCIAC regular season tournament, and capped off her season with a strong showing at the SCIAC Championships last weeek, finishing in a tie for second place with a 223 (including a second-round 71) leaving her just one shot out of first place.
Lu had four top-five finishes on the year, including taking individual medalist honors at the second SCIAC regular season championship on April 10 with a 150, when she was competing as an individual since the Athenas only had two players cleared to compete. She also was fourth at the Westbrook Invitational at the Lakes in Phoenix, where she had a 147, and was the runner-up in fall duals with both Chapman and La Verne.
CMS received an invitation to the NCAA Division III Championship, and will begin play on Tuesday in Houston, Texas, in an event that will consist of four rounds from May 10-13. The Athenas won the national championship in 2018, and finished fourth in 2019, the last time they competed.
