History Repeats as CMS Women's Golf Ties Williams for First Place at Bulldog Classic

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Stella Cheng earned individual medalist honors at -1 and Jeissy Lee shot a -2 on Sunday to move into a tie for second, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team rallied from seven shots down to tie Williams for first place at the Redlands Bulldog Classic, although Williams was declared the official champion due to a scorecard playoff.

The same two teams also had one of the most memorable ties in CMS athletics history, as they matched each other stroke for stroke over 72 holes at the NCAA Division III Championship in 2018. Unlike regular season tournaments, that one went to a playoff, and CMS was able to prevail by one stroke after two extra holes to win the national championship.

Cheng birdied the 18th hole to give her the outright individual title at -1 over the two-day tournament, while also pulling CMS even with Williams for the weekend. Lee started on the second hole, an also birdied her 18th hole (No. 1) to finish a round of 70 that pulled her even for the tournament with a 144, tying for the low round of the day with Rylee Suttor of Centre College, who came in fourth.

Grace Lu was steady down the stretch with seven straight pars, after recording an eagle on the par-five seventh (her fifth hole of the day), to finish a 74 for the day and a tie for seventh with a 149 over the two rounds. Tiffany Hu closed out with five straight pars to be the fourth CMS scorer with a 76, as CMS shot a 292 on the day, one day after a 300 in its opening round.

Williams shot a 293 on Saturday to build a seven-shot lead, but slipped to a 299 on Sunday, opening the door a crack for the Athenas, and they were able to take advantage with a strong finish to pull even. The Ephs actually all parred their final two holes, but the birdies from Cheng and Lee were able to close the final deficit and make them co-champions.

Centre College finished third, seven shots behind CMS and Williams, while Redlands was fourth, 12 shots behind. Lucy Bloomstran also earned a top-15 finish for CMS, coming in 13th place with a 151.

The Athenas will be back in action on April 9-10, at the second SCIAC regular season tournament in Industry Hills, before heading to the SCIAC Championships April 24-26 at Tukwet Canyon.
