
CMS Women's Golf Earns Championship at SCIAC No. 1 by Seven Strokes
VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team came into the day with a two-shot lead and had a second straight solid performance to capture the team title at the first SCIAC regular season tournament at Olivas Links.
CMS shot just two-over as a team for the day (290) as it took the team championship with a 293-290-583 for a +7 over 36 holes, beating out second-place Pomona-Pitzer (+14). Redlands, meanwhile, was a distant third at +42.
Emily Chang of Pomona-Pitzer took individual medalist honors, but CMS had the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 finishers on the individual leaderboard. Stella Cheng, who came into the spring as the No. 1 rated golfer in the GolfStat computer rankings, had the low round in the field on Sunday with a 2-under 70, moving her into a tie for second at an even-par 144. She tied with teammate Jeissy Lee, who followed up her 71 on Saturday with a 73 to finish with the same 144 score, while Irene Jun was just one shot behind them with a 72-73-145.
Tiffany Hu also had a strong Sunday performance to help CMS to the team title, shooting a 74 to become the fourth scorer for the Athenas to secure the victory, closing with birdies on 17 and 18 on her final two holes.
Cheng had a quick start with two birdies to get back to even par after a +2 on Saturday, and then played even over the final 16 holes.
CMS will be back in action in two weeks at the George Fox Invitational, which will be held in Phoenix, Arizona.
