Rancho Mirage, Calif. - Stella Cheng shot a three-under 69 on Sunday to win individual medalist honors as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team held on to its lead to win a dramatic Redlands Fall Shootout by just one stroke on Sunday afternoon at the S Club.
The Athenas had an impressive bounce-back weekend after coming in fifth at the season-opening California State Intercollegiate Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. This time, CMS came in at +8 over the two rounds, edging host Redlands by one shot and Pomona-Pitzer by two, which were two teams it finished behind earlier in the week.
The Athenas led by seven after Saturday's opening round, but held off challenges from both the Bulldogs and Sagehens for their first win of the new campaign.
Cheng's 69 gave her a -5 over the two-day tournament, winning the individual title by two shots over Hannah Jugar of Redlands. Irene Jun, who shot a 69 yesterday, was also in the red at -1 to come in third place overall.
The Athenas had two other golfers finish in the top 10, as Reina Tain ended up fifth overall at +2, and Hiuying (Erin) Li ended up tied for eighth after a -1 on Sunday, although she was competing as an individual and didn't factor into the CMS team score.
Cheng started on the third hole and began her day with a birdie, and then added birdies on No. 2, No. 8 and No. 12 as she peaked at -4 on the day through 10 holes. Jun also started on the third, and had a tough stretch from No. 9-13, but dug down and came up big down the stretch, shooting -1 over her final seven holes to help CMS to the team win.
Cheng and Jun both did not compete at the Cal State Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, but shot a combined -6 this weekend in their first collegiate competitions to lead CMS.
The Athenas will be back in action this weekend when they host a pair of duals against Chapman on Saturday and La Verne on Sunday.
