Athenas post low round again, lead SCIAC Championships by 27

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team is in the lead of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship tournament by 27 strokes over Pomona-Pitzer and 41 strokes lower than the University of Redlands in the overall conference standings. In the second day of the SCIAC Championships, sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC) brought home a 73 to jump into a tie for fourth individually.

Ransom finished the round with 13 pars, second only to freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC) who had 14. Ransom sits at just 10-over including her 81 from Sunday afternoon. Her two birdies on the day came on holes that she bogeyed the day prior – holes No. 9 and 17 – neither of which were par 5s.

Hughes remains in the lead of the 39-player field with a 148 total. She started off with a bogey on No. 1 but then played a much more even game than yesterday's round. On the back nine, Hughes was even after a birdie on No. 15 for the second day in a row.

Classmate Emma Kang (CMC) bettered her score from Sunday to post a 74 on Monday. Similarly to Hughes, she was even on the final nine and birdied No. 15 again. She currently sits in second place individually, just one stroke behind Hughes.

The final Athena to count toward the team score today was junior Margaret Loncki (CMC) with a 79. She started the round with two birdies in the first four holes and made the turn with a 38. The back nine was trending towards an excellent round, but a seven on No. 18 kept a score in the mid-70s out of reach.

Still, the Athenas posted the second lowest team score of the year at 301. Back in October, CMS scored a 300 from the gold tees on Los Serranos' North Course, led by Kang with a 74 that day.

Tomorrow, CMS pairs with Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran again for the final day of the SCIAC Championships. Freshman Eunice Song (CMC) will be in the first group of CMS players and teeing off at 8:44 a.m.
