A wire-to-wire win for Athenas at Cal Lu Invite
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – At the Cal Lutheran Regals Invite, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team led throughout en route to a first-place finish at the two-round event held March 14-15 at Sunset Hills Golf Course. CMS secured a large lead in the first round (22 strokes) and then stretched out its lead in the second round to win the invitational by 24 strokes. Sophomore Margaret Loncki (CMC) won her second event of the spring (Walker Cup) for CMS.
The Athenas combined for a score of 653, followed by Pomona-Pitzer (677), Cal Lutheran and Occidental (682) and Marymount (704) to round out the top-5 in the 9-team tournament.
Just as CMS led after the first round, so did Loncki. Her first round score of 6-over par, 78 (the lowest round for any golfer in the tournament) gave Loncki a one-shot advantage heading into the second round. In the second round, Loncki scored an 81 for a total score of 159, two strokes ahead of Marymount's Monica Fisher.
All told, CMS landed four golfers in the top-10 out of a field of 50 participants. Scores were close at the top as seven strokes separated the individual medalist from a tie for ninth place. Junior Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC) tied for sixth (164) with an 80 and 84. One stroke behind Kain-Godoy in eighth was junior Liberty Ramsey (CMC) who competed as an individual. Also in the top-10 was freshman Mary Bryan Owen (CMC) who tied for ninth (166) and had scores of 81 and 85.
Other competitors for CMS were freshman Nathalie Limandibhratha (170) who competed as individual and tied for 13th, sophomore Maya Bhat (CMC - 173) who tied for 19th and senior Caroline Belmont (CMC – 180) who tied for 27th and competed as an individual.
Back in action on March 19-20, CMS travels to Pacific Grove, Calif. for the UC Santa Cruz Invitational at Pacific Grove Links.
