Season Preview: 2016 CMS Women’s Golf

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Despite the graduation of two key seniors from the 2015 team that finished second in conference (regular season and SCIAC Championships), the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team has reloaded for the upcoming season. The Athenas tee off their spring season on Feb. 14 in the Walker Cup at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.

One of the top returners for the Athenas is sophomore Margaret Loncki (CMC), the reigning individual medalist at the SCIAC Championships. She edged out Pomona-Pitzer's Tiffany Gu by one stroke for the conference championship.

Of the 10 Athenas on the roster, just three are upperclassmen: senior Caroline Belmont (CMC), junior Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC) and junior Liberty Ramsey (CMC). Kain-Godoy tied for ninth at the SCIAC Championships last spring and she carried her stellar play into the fall. At the Embry-Riddle Invite in September, Kain-Godoy finished in second place to lead the Athenas.

A pair of freshmen from CMS joined Kain-Godoy in the top-10 at the Embry-Riddle Invite. Mary Bryan Owen (CMC) and Kelly Ransom (CMC) tied for 10th in the event with the second-best scores for CMS in Arizona. Mary Bryan Owen closed out the fall with a third-place finish at the CMS Quad to lead CMS.

After the Walker Cup, the Athenas have less than a week to prepare for the SCIAC #1 Tournament, Feb. 20-21 at Tukwet Canyon Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. The Athenas are in search of the fourth conference championship in the young history of women's golf at CMS.
