Athenas Finish As Top Division III Team At Season’s First Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In its first tournament of the spring season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team finished as the top NCAA Division III team at the Super San Diego Championship and in sixth place overall in the 20-team field. The tournament took place at the par-72 Riverwalk Golf Course on Feb. 11-12 hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University.

The Athenas shot a two-day score of 648 to finish in sixth place behind first place Cal State San Marcos (626), Grand Canyon University (632), Sonoma State University (635), Point Loma (644) and Northwood University (647).

Sophomore Shaina Raskin finished in 14th place overall at plus-14 with a two-day total of 158. She finished nine shots off the pace set by Megan Woodland of the University of Victoria. Raskin's second day score of 78 at six-over par was tops for the Athenas during the tournament.

Three strokes behind Raskin were junior Maya Reddy and sophomore Tiffany Su who tied for 17th at plus-17 with a two-day score of 161. The trio of Raskin, Reddy and Su finished as the top three individuals at the tournament from the Division III ranks.

Other competitors for CMS at the tournament were junior Jackie Ketner (167) who tied for 42nd, sophomore Marissa Suehiro (168) who tied for 47th, freshman Caroline Belmont (170) who tied for 51st, junior Elizabeth Diebel (172) who tied for 62nd and freshman Melody Sue (176) who tied for 75th. From the 20 schools, 109 golfers competed in the tournament.

While the team had a solid showing at the tournament, Suehiro had the team's top individual moment with a hole-in-one on the 16th hole of the tournament's second day, the first of her career.

The Athenas play in their next tournament on Friday, Feb. 15 at the Pomona Invitational.
