The Class of 20! CMS Women's Basketball Seniors Earn Fourth Straight 20-Win Season on Senior Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team honored its three seniors prior to the game, and then picked up its 20th win of the season with a 62-47 victory over Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.

Guard Teeana Cotangco, guard Corinne Bogle and forward Ellery Koelker-Wolfe celebrated their Senior Day and improved their career record to 86-21 over the last four years, including 20-2 this season, their fourth 20-win season in a row (Bogle as a fifth-year senior has been with the program for five straight 20-win seasons). 

"It's been a long journey," said Cotangoco. "It's been a lot of fun playing with these girls and I'm excited to see how far we're going to go this season. This has definitely been a fun year to wrap up my career."



The 18th-ranked Athenas also won their 16th game in a row, since falling to Chapman on Dec. 1 in their SCIAC opener. CMS is now 12-1 in the SCIAC, maintaining its solo hold on first place with three games left in the regular season. 

It took a while for CMS to get going, as it held only an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, but quickly found its groove after a slow start. Junior guard Lauren Longo came off the bench to knock down three straight three-pointers in the first half (finishing with a team-high 11 points) and the Athenas rode that momentum to take a 31-17 lead at the break, holding the Beavers to only seven points on 2-10 shooting in the second (with a buzzer-beating three-pointer being one of the baskets).

The Athenas kept the defensive intensity on high in the third quarter, holding Caltech to only nine points as they took a 48-26 lead into the fourth quarter after an offensive rebound and putback from junior guard Maya Love. The Beavers had a late push to cut a 28-point CMS fourth quarter lead down to 62-47 at the final, but the game was never in doubt over the final 10 minutes. 

Caltech center Elizabeth Eiden had a big game with 24 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, controlling a paint area that CMS had dominated in recent games. The Beavers outscored CMS 26-16 in the paint, after the Athenas had held a 102-28 advantage in that department over the last three games, but knocked down nine three-pointers to overcome the paint being clogged. 

"A lot of teams have been sagging off of us, said Cotangco, who hit two three-pointers on the day. "So being able to work the ball around and knock down shots outside has been essential for us."

Junior guard Gloria Bates earned her second start of the season and joined Longo in double figures with 10 points. Koelker-Wolfe had a season-high nine rebounds to lead the Athenas in that category, while Cotangco had five assists to all players. 

CMS will be back in action on Monday night when it entertains La Verne for a 6 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion, in a make-up of a game that was postponed last weekend.
