Ed Laughton

CMC '62

Ed Laughton was the program's first outstanding distance runner.  He lettered in cross country and track all four year at Claremont Men's.  He was Claremont-Mudd's first SCIAC Track & Field Champion and the first SCIAC Cross Country Champion ever from Claremont Men's.  As a junior in 1960-61, he finished first at the SCIAC Championships in cross country in the fall and won the mile at the SCIAC Track & Field Championships in the spring.  He also earned NAIA All-American honors that spring in both the mile and steeplechase.  He was a three-time First Team All-SCIAC honoree in cross country, a feat that was not accomplished by another Stag until 12 years later.  Laughton was the team captain of the track & field team as a senior in 1962.

Upon graduation, Laughton held school records at 880 yards (1:53.9), Mile (4:14.1), 2 Mile (9:41.0), 3 Mile (15:47.5), 3000m Steeplechase (9:47.5) and 10,000 Meters (33:23.0).
