Ed Laughton

Ed Laughton was the program's first outstanding distance runner. He lettered in cross country and track all four year at Claremont Men's. He was Claremont-Mudd's first SCIAC Track & Field Champion and the first SCIAC Cross Country Champion ever from Claremont Men's. As a junior in 1960-61, he finished first at the SCIAC Championships in cross country in the fall and won the mile at the SCIAC Track & Field Championships in the spring. He also earned NAIA All-American honors that spring in both the mile and steeplechase. He was a three-time First Team All-SCIAC honoree in cross country, a feat that was not accomplished by another Stag until 12 years later. Laughton was the team captain of the track & field team as a senior in 1962.
Upon graduation, Laughton held school records at 880 yards (1:53.9), Mile (4:14.1), 2 Mile (9:41.0), 3 Mile (15:47.5), 3000m Steeplechase (9:47.5) and 10,000 Meters (33:23.0).
