CMS Men's Track and Field Dominates Second Day to Win Third Straight SCIAC Title

LA VERNE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team trailed by 11 points after Saturday's five events were completed, but the Stags dominated on the second and final day on Sunday to roll to a win by 65.5 points to earn their third straight SCIAC title.

CMS finished the competition with 230 points, while Pomona-Pitzer was second with 164.50 points and Redlands was third with 35 points.

The biggest storyline was the two relays, which both set meet records. The 4x100 relay began the day's competition with a 40.64, becoming the first quartet in program history to break the 41-second barrier. Quincey Williams, Christian Campbell, Nick Teresi and Joshua Martinez held the school record coming in of 41.05, set earlier this season.

The 4x400 relay closed out the competition with a 3:11.87, breaking a SCIAC meet record (3:12.02) which had stood for 60 years since Occidental set it in 1963. Campbell and Teresi ran the first two legs, while Ellis DelVecchio and Jamie Cockburn ran the third and fourth legs, winning the race by almost five seconds over Pomona-Pitzer (3:16.56).

In addition to their success on the relays, Campbell (100, 200) and Teresi (400) enabled the Stags to earn a sweep of the sprints as well, while Martinez came in first in the 110-meter hurdles. Campbell ran a 10.58 in the 100 to win by .12 over Markelle Raymond-Hill of Redlands, while Williams qualified for the finals and came in sixth. Campbell then won the 200 in 21.45, beating out Tyler Thomas of La Verne by .19 to take first place, while Teresi, Williams and Cockburn were fifth, sixth and eighth as the Stags had half of the eight-runner field in the finals.

Teresi ran a 47.30 to take the 400 meters and move into second place in CMS history, behind only Ryan Martin's 46.95 in 2006, while Cockburn was second with a 48.02. Martinez won the 110-meter hurdles by just .03, edging Zachary Reid of La Verne 14.60 to 14.63, while coming just .01 shy of the CMS record set by William Fulton in 1991.

DelVecchio earned a second-place finish in the 800 meters in 1:52.84 to earn All-SCIAC honors, while Kai Dettman came in sixth. Henry Pick came in second in the 1500 meters in 3:48.92, while Noah Nevens (fifth) and Daniel Krasemann (eighth) both scored as well. Gus Albach earned All-SCIAC honors in the 5000 in 14:35.87, coming in third, while Colin Scanlon was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.28.

Sarath Kakani repeated as the SCIAC Champion in the shot put with a throw of an even 16 meters (52'6") on his final attempt, leading a 1-2-3-4 CMS finish. Ian Osborne was second with a throw of 14.28 meters, while Jason Bowman was third (14.17) and Jacob Yep was fourth (13.81). Osborne and Bowman also earned All-SCIAC in the discus by coming in second and third, while Ezra Bacon-Gershman scored with an eighth-place finish.

Leo Sundstrom earned All-SCIAC in the pole vault with a top clearance of 4.71 meters (15'5.5"), while John Horan also joined him on the podium by tying for third. Kumi Selva scored in two of the jumps, finishing sixth in the triple jump at 12.99 meters and eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.62 meters.

Several CMS student-athletes will continue competing at various season ending meets in order to try for qualifying standards for the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held Memorial Day Weekend in Rochester, New York.
