Bowman, Knowles Win SCIAC Titles for Stags on First Day of League Championships
LA VERNE, Calif. - Jason Bowman took first place in the hammer throw and Truman Knowles repeated as champion in the javelin to highlight the performance of the CMS men's track and field team on the first day of the SCIAC Championships on Saturday at La Verne.
Knowles took first place in the javelin by 13 feet, recording a top throw of 57.71 meters (189'4") and earning 10 points for the Stags. Bowman earned first-place in the hammer with a throw of 171'3" (52.21 meters) was one of four Stags to score, with Ian Osborne also earning All-SCIAC distinction with a second-place finish (154'8"), while Logan O'Keefe was sixth and Ezra Bacon-Gershman was eighth.
Most of the track events had their prelims on Saturday, except for the steeplechase and 10000 meters, which saw CMS have two runners score in each. Hayden Beauchemin was fourth in the steeplechase in 9:23.60, while Agustin Gomez De la Vega was sveenth in 9:39.75. In the 10000, Adam Sage came in fourth in 31:24.59 and Daniel Fajardo was sixth in 31:49.47.
In prelims, Christian Campbell had the fastest time in the 100 (10.60) and the 200 (21.45). He will be joined in the 100 finals by Quincey Williams (10.95), and in the 200 finals by Jamie Cockburn (21.93), Nick Teresi (22.03), and Williams (22.13). Teresi (49.20) and Cockburn (49.75) will also be in the 400-meter finals as well.
In the 800 meters, Ellis DelVecchio had the third-fastest time with a 1:52.84 and will be joined in the finals by Kai Dettman (1:53.00). Five Stags reached the 12-runner finals in the 1500, with Henry Pick running a sub-4 minute prelim (3:59.89), who will be joined by Noah Nevens, Henry Pick, Daniel Krasemann, Adam Cohan and Mark Russell.
In the two hurdles events, Joshua Martinez qualified in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.21, while Colin Scanlon qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with a 56.38.
Pomona-Pitzer holds a narrow 11-point lead over CMS after the first day (58-47) on the strength of its strong performances in the two distance events, but the Stags are still in strong position to defend their league title with sprints and relays, as well as the shot put and discus, still to come. The Sagehens have just one finalist in the 100, 200 and 400, and none in either hurdles event.
Day two of the SCIAC Championships gets underway at 10 a.m. tomorrow with the discus, with track events starting at 3:30 p.m. with the 4x100 relay.
