CMS Men's Tennis Advances to NCAA Regional Finals with 5-0 Win over UC Santa Cruz
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Ian Freer and Advik Mareedu won singles decisions after contributing to a doubles sweep as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a 5-0 win over UC Santa Cruz in the NCAA Division III Regional Semifinals on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, sixth-ranked CMS improves to 20-4 overall on the season, including 13 wins in a row, and advances to face No. 8 Trinity in the NCAA Regional Finals tomorrow at 12 noon.
CMS swept doubles in convincing fashion, with Mareedu and Warren Pham notching the first point with an 8-1 win at No. 3. The first year pair have now won five straight matches and are 14-4 together on the season. Freer and Morgan Schilling followed with an 8-3 win at No. 2, reversing the outcome of the first meeting between the two teams on March 30. Christian Settles and Matthew Robinson remained unbeaten in their last eight matches, completing the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 2, and replicating an 8-5 win against the same team they faced five weeks ago.
CMS needed just two singles points to secure the victory, and Freer and Mareedu both raced through 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 3 and No. 1 respectively. Mareedu improves his singles record to 27-4 at the top spot, while Freer improves to 15-6 at No. 3 Robinson very nearly got the clinch at No. 2 singles, leading 6-2, 5-4, and only two points from victory when the dual match was halted. Pham at No. 5 also held a one set lead when play was abandoned.
The Stags face Trinity tomorrow with a trip to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals in Orlando on the line. CMS will be trying to win a regional and advance to nationals for the 12th season in a row.
