CMS Men's Tennis Takes Down UC Santa Cruz 7-2
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Matthew Robinson and Christian Settles won at No. 1 doubles, Advik Mareedu and Warren Pham won at No. 3 doubles, and all four added straight set singles wins as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team defeated UC Santa Cruz 7-2 on Thursday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS moves to 8-4 on the season, while UC Santa Cruz slips to 4-7.
The Banana Slugs took an early 1-0 lead with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, but Mareedu and Pham won their second straight at No. 3 to even the match. Settles and Robinson buitl a 5-1 lead at No. 1 before cruising to an 8-5 win which gave the Stags a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.
Mareedu's 6-0, 6-2 thrashing at No. 1 extended the CMS lead to 3-1, followed by Pham's similarly paced 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5, leaving Robinson to clinch at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-4 win.
Settles followed moments after the Robinson win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4, and Ian Freer capped off the win with the seventh point for the Stags, gutting out the first set and cruising in the second with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win at No. 3.
CMS will be back in action when it returns to SCIAC play tomorrow, hosting Occidental at 3 PM.
