CMS Men's Tennis Defeats Chapman, Falls to UC Riverside to Complete Busy Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team ended a four-match, thirty-six hour series of duals with an 8-1 win over Chapman on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, bouncing back from a road defeat to Division I UC Riverside 6-1 in the morning.

With the split, CMS now stands at 19-5 on the year, while remaining undefeated in the SCIAC at 4-0. 

Michael Hao accounted for the one CMS point at UC Riverside with a singles victory, and then tacked on a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles in the Chapman win. Hao completed the series of matches going 4-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, improving his season totals to 15-2 in singles and 5-0 in doubles. Robert Liu returned to the singles lineup at No. 1 after a two week absence and earned a 6-2, 6-3 win against Chapman's Caleb Wilkins, currently ranked as the No. 3 singles player in the West Region. Christopher Li joined Liu as the only other Stag with 19 singles wins on the season, putting up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Ethan Carroll stayed perfect in conference play, and won his fifth in his last six singles matches with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3. 

Ian Habbestad's ninth win of the season - a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles - gave CMS singles wins at five of the six positions. CMS also swept doubles in perhaps their most dominant performance this season, with Liu and Ian Freer partnering for the first time in an 8-1 win at No. 1. Carroll and Morgan Schilling, who had played for the first time togther earlier in the day at UC Riverside, found their rhythm in an 8-2 win at No. 2, while Li and Hao got a convincing 8-2 win at No. 3. 

CMS had a busy two days with four matches in four towns, culminating with the home win over Chapman. The Stags also played in La Mirada against Biola yesterday (a 4-3 defeat) before traveling to Whittier in the afternoon. 

The Stags will play in two different towns again on Friday, meeting Occidental in a SCIAC match before traveling to Azusa Pacific. CMS will then return home for a big match with Pomona-Pitzer in a battle for first place in the SCIAC on Saturday at 6 p.m.
