CMS Men's Tennis Dominates No. 22 Caltech for 9-0 Win in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Tennis team earned straight-set wins on all six singles lines as it captured a 9-0 win over No. 22 Caltech on Friday afternoon in the SCIAC opener for both teams.

With two more matches tomorrow, CMS used only six of its players and all six produced singles-doubles sweeps. Philip Martin and Nathan Arimilli took an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, Jack Katzman and Matthew Robinson captured an 8-3 win at No. 2 and Ethan Carroll and Christopher Li finished off the sweep with the tightest match of the night, prevailing 8-6 at No. 3. The Stags have now won 36 consecutive doubles matches in conference play, dating back to May 5, 2018.

Li was the first one to earn a singles victory as he captured a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4. Li is now 16-3 on the year, and is 14-2 in dual matches this spring. The clinch then went to Carroll at No. 6, who earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory to put the Stags ahead 5-0. 

Robinson earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 to stretch the lead to 6-0, and Martin produced another big win at No. 1 singles, after knocking off Williams and George Fox at No. 1 over the weekend, winning 6-1, 6-3. Katzman earned his fourth straight dual match win, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Arimilli then finished off the 9-0 win with a 6-2, 6-2 result playing at the No. 5 position. 

The Stags will head to Cal Lutheran tomorrow to continue SCIAC play with a 10 a.m. match, before adding a non-conference road match at Westmont at 3 p.m. CMS is now 15-3 overall, and 1-0 in conference play.
