CMS Men's Tennis Closes Out ITA Indoors with 5-1 Win over Brandeis

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team closed out the ITA D3 National Team Indoors with a 5-1 win over Brandeis in the fifth-place match on Sunday morning at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

With the win, CMS moves to 6-2 on the season, after dropping its season opener to USC and then falling 5-4 to Chicago on the first day of the ITA Indoors. The Stags quickly bounced back from that defeat to take down Emory on Saturday 7-2 in a rematch of the 2019 national championship and then defeat Brandeis today in the fifth place match. 

Philip Martin and Matthew Robinson earned an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles and then picked up dominant wins in singles to help CMS to a quick clinch,before the match was stopped on the final day of the ITA D3 National Team Indoors. Robinson put the Stags on top 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6, followed by Christopher Li in straight sets at No. 5 to increase CMS' lead to 4-1. Philip Martin then clinched the dual match victory for CMS with his 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.

Robert Liu and Jack Katzman finished the tournament on a strong note, earning their second consecutive doubles win at No. 1, over Brandeis' Adam Tzeng and Jeff Chen. The other three singles matches were left unfinished, where the Stags had dropped the first set in all three, but had started to swing momentum. At No. 4 singles, Ian Freer dropped the first set but came back to win the second 6-0 before play was stopped. No. 1 Liu and No. 3 Ethan Carroll also held second-set leads after losing first sets. 

CMS will return to action this weekend when it travels to La Jolla for the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, where it will also take on Division I Villanova in a dual match. Both the tournament and dual match will be contested at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
