Robert Liu Earns SCIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Honor

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Robert Liu of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps captured the SCIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award for matches through Sunday, Feb. 13, the league office announced today.

Liu played at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in the first home match for the Stags in almost two years, when they faced Westcliff of the NAIA on Saturday. Liu and Jack Katzman battled back out of an early hole to take a 6-4 win in doubles, and then Liu continued that momentum on into singles with a dominant effort. In fact, he didn't drop a single game on his way to a 6-0, 6-0 win, taking the final point of the match at 40-40 (playing no deuces rules) to complete the shutout.

CMS went on to add a 7-0 win over Hope International on Saturday in the nightcap of the doubleheader, although Liu did not compete in that one as the Stags got everyone on the roster some game action on opening day. Liu was coming off a terrific fall season, which saw him earn All-America honors by winning the ITA West Regionals in Claremont, and then continuing on to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia.

CMS will be back in action this Friday for two more home matches at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, taking on Point Loma at 1 p.m. and then playing its first Division III match of the year against UC Santa Cruz at 5 p.m.
