CMS Men's Tennis Sweeps First Home Duals of 2021-22 Season
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team had its first home duals since March of 2020 and came away with a 6-1 win over Westcliff and a 7-0 win over Hope International on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the wins, CMS improves to 2-1 on the season, with the loss coming to USC, a top-10 Division I program, in its spring opener back in January.
Michael Hao and Morgan Schilling each picked up singles wins in both duals, with Hao coming back from a set down to win at No. 5 against Westcliff and then again at No. 3 against Hope International. Schilling picked up straight set wins at No. 6 against Westcliff and No. 5 against HIU in the nightcap. Robert Liu (6-0, 6-0 against Westcliff) and Jack Katzman (6-4, 6-2 against Hope International) each had wins at No. 1 singles on the day, after also teaming up for a win at No. 1 doubles against Westcliff. Ian Freer (No. 3) and Matthew Robinson (No. 4) added singles wins against Westcliff, and Christopher Li (No. 2), Ian Habbestad (No. 4) and Daniel Blackman (No. 6) had singles wins against Hope International.
The Stags were also dominant in doubles, winning all six matches on the day. Ethan Carroll and Freer (No. 2) and Robinson and Schilling (No. 3) earned wins against Westcliff, while Carroll and Katzman (No. 1), Hao and Habbestad (No. 2) and Blackman and Li (No. 3) earned wins against the Royals in the nightcap.
Next up for CMS is another double header on Friday, February 18 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Stags face Division II Point Loma Nazarene at 1 PM, and then West Region Division III opponent UC Santa Cruz at 5 PM.
