Eight Stags Capture ITA Scholar-Athlete Honors, CMS Earns All-Academic Team Distinction

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team honors for having a team GPA above a 3.2 for the 2018-19 season, the organization announced today.

In addition, eight members of the Stags earned ITA Scholar-Athlete Award honors, which require at least a 3.5 grade point average during the 2018-19 academic year. Seniors Julian Gordy and Alfred Simental capped off their CMS careers with All-Academic distinction, and were joined on the team by juniors Nikolai Parodi, Jake Williams, Jake Berber and Matthew Jacobs, sophomore Jack Katzman and first-year Nic Meister

On the court, the Stags had another spectacular season, tallying a 33-2 record and reaching the NCAA Division III Tournament finals for the fifth time in the last seven years. CMS was ranked No. 1 in the nation for the final six weeks, and came up just short of the program's third national title with a 5-3 defeat to Emory in the national championship match.

Parodi, Katzman and Gordy also all capped off the 2018-19 season by earning spots in the national rankings in singles. Parodi (No. 4) and Katzman (No. 5) finished the season in the top five, the third time in three seasons that Parodi has accomplished that feat, and the second time in two seasons that Katzman has ended the year ranked fifth or higher. Gordy, meanwhile, earned a spot in the national singles rankings for the first time in his final season, checking in at No. 43.

Parodi, who played at No. 1 singles for the third year in a row for CMS, was also named the SCIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Year, while Meister, who held down the No. 6 position in the second half of the year to solidify the CMS postseason line-up, was the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year.
