CMS Men's Swim and Dive Concludes Regular Season at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Frank Applebaum, the NCAA Division III record holder in the 200-yard butterfly, moved into third place in CMS history in the 100-yard backstroke (48.76) to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.

The Pomona-Pitzer Invitational is a non-team scoring event that serves as the final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships, which will be held Feb. 22-25 at East Los Angeles College. 

Cyrus Gaylord swept the two diving boards in his final preparation for SCIACs, getting back into form after studying abroad in the fall. He won the one-meter by just 1.65 points over Liam Gilbert-Lawrence of Pomona-Pitzer (299.80 to 298.15) but earned a more comfortable 13.3-point win over him in the three-meter (322.45-309.15). 

Thayer Breazeale did likewise, after also not competing in the fall, breaking 1:50 in the 200-yard butterfly to move into fourth all-time at CMS with a 1:49.66, winning by almost five seconds over Cassidy Liu from Pomona-Pitzer. He also broke 50 seconds in the 100 fly in 49.96, finishing second to Larry Yu.

Dylan Krueger had a strong swim to win the 50 free in 20.86, with Theo Johnson earning a 46.87 to take first in the 100 free. Alex Johnson earned first place in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.67 and Grant Stucky took the 200 back in 1:54.53.  

CMS will be back in action when it travels to the SCIAC Championships, where they will try to defend their league title. The Stags have won the last three league titles in a row (2020, 2022, 2023), with a one-year interruption due to the pandemic.
