CMS Men's Swimming and Diving Earns Second Straight SCIAC Sweep, Rolls Past Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. - The CMS men's swimming and diving team swept every event for the second week in a row as it captured a dominant 191-52 win at Redlands on Saturday afternoon.

The Stags, who also won every event last week at Whittier, improve to 5-1 in the SCIAC with one conference meet left, a tri-meet at home against Cal Lutheran and La Verne on Feb. 2. 

In addition to the sweep, CMS also came away with three new records at the Thompson Aquatic Center. The meet opened with the Stags setting a new mark at the facility with a 3:25.80 in the 400-yard medley relay, with junior Dave Makhervaks (back), senior Aaron Lutzker (breast), sophomore Marco Conati (fly) and sophomore Andreas Roeseler (free) breaking the old mark by almost two seconds (which was set by CMS in 2013). 

On an individual level, freshman Michael Lee (pictured) became the first swimmer to break 10 minutes at Thompson in the 1000 free, winning in 9:51.26 for a new pool standard, passing a mark which had stood since 2009. Lutzker added a new record in the 200-yard breaststroke as well, winning in 2:03.29, passing another 10-year old Stag mark. 

After Lee set the record in the 1000, junior Alex Moody took away first place in the 200 free by just four-hundredths of a second over senior Jackson Crewe (1:45.82 to 1:45.86), with Roeseler making it a 1-2-3 finish for the Stags. Conati took first in the 50 free (21.28) with sophomore Will Grassle coming in second, before Lutzker picked up his first of two individual wins with a 4:06.99 in the 400 IM. 

After junior Kendall Hollimon took the one-meter diving crown, competing a sweep of the two diving events, freshman Matthew Waddell kept the win streak going with a 1:54.62 in the 200 fly. Roeseler earned a win in the 100 free in 47.55, and Makhervaks picked up an individual win in the 200 back in 1:57.67, with Crewe picking up another close second to his teammate in 1:57.90.

Waddell tacked on a win in the 500 free (4:45.58) before Lutzker added the pool record in the 200 breast. Freshman Christian Simon, sophomore Daniel Hayon, Makhervaks and Conati capped off the meet with a win in the 400 free relay in 3:10.05. 

After a week off to rest, CMS will be back in action for their final meet of the year at Axelrood Pool on Feb. 2, when it welcomes in Cal Lutheran and La Verne for a tri-meet, beginning at 10 a.m.
