CMS Men's Swimming and Diving Drops Distance Meet to Division I Cal Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team, which was last in action over a month ago, fell on the road to Division I Cal Baptist on Friday afternoon in a distance meet by a final score of 158-82.

The Stags last competed on December 1 when they dropped a close two-day contest to Pomona-Pitzer. CMS is now 3-5 on the year, but two of the losses have come against programs in the process of moving up to Division I (UC San Diego, Cal Baptist, with the Lancers now in their first year as provisional members of the Western Athletic Conference) and the other three have been to teams in the top 10 of Division III (WashU, Chicago, Pomona-Pitzer).

The meet against Cal Baptist featured an unusual format as most events covered longer distances than the NCAA standards. The backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and IM all were 300-yard events, instead of the normal 100-yard and 200-yard distances, while the medley and freestyle relays both covered 500 yards instead of the usual 200 or 400.

The Lancers won most of the individual events, but the Stags were able to close out strong after the second intermission. Junior Henry Limm (pictured) took first place in the 300-yard breaststroke with a time of 3:24.86, easily winning by almost six seconds over Cal Baptist's Ryan Schade.

The 500-yard medley relay team came in second by a narrow margin of 1.5 seconds, finishing in 4:40.05 behind freshman Nicholas Tan (back), senior Aaron Lutzker (breast), sophomore Marco Conati (fly) and sophomore Andreas Roeseler (free). Freshman Michael Lee also put up a strong challenge in the 1000-yard freestyle, coming in second with a time of 9:56.54, just over four seconds behind Dylan Sweikert of Cal Baptist, while also coming in second place in the 500 (4:48.38).

Tan added a second-place finish in the 300 back with a 3:01.91, and sophomore Will Grassle had a strong effort in the 50 free, coming in third with a time of 21.97. Junior All-American diver Kendall Hollimon, returning to action after studying abroad in the fall, came in second place in the one-meter with 264.08 points.

CMS will be back in action on Sunday when the divers compete at home against Westminster (Pa.) before the Athenas get back to SCIAC competition with a full meet at Whittier on Saturday, Jan. 12.
