Back in SCIAC competition, CMS takes down Oxy
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after competing at Cal Baptist, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimmers and divers were back in the pool for its first conference meet in over a month, against Occidental. The Athenas defeated Occidental 196-76, while the Stags turned in a dominant effort as well, winning 188-86 on Jan. 9 at Axelrood Pool.
Combined, CMS won 25 events on Saturday, as the Athenas finished in first 13 times and the Stags won 12 times.
Freshman Aaron Lutzker (HMC) swam his way to a top-10 time in the 100 breaststroke (58.67). His time ranks 10th all-time and was just off the pool record time of 58.49 set by Brad Perfect. Lutzker also added a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke. In the 100 backstroke, junior Matthew Williams (CMC) touched the wall in 50.80 which earned him an NCAA 'B' cut, just eight-one hundredths of a second under the 'B' cut time. Williams also added wins on the afternoon as part of the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams. Senior Alex Poltash (CMC; 200 medley and 200 free relay, 50 freestyle) also had three victories for the Stags.
Two-event winners were Lutzker, sophomore Victor Ginelli (CMC; 3 and 1-meter boards) and senior Joseph Hinton (CMC; 200 medley and 200 free relay) while five other Stags won an event either in a relay or an individual event. In the 3-meter dive (282.60), Ginelli narrowly missed the NCAA qualifying mark of 285.
Freshman Riley Hoffman (CMC) stole the show for the Athenas winning four events. She won the 100 backstroke, 200 back and 200-yard individual medley. She also swam on the winning 200 medley relay CMS 'B' team. Relay teammate Kelly Ngo (CMC; 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 100 free) and junior Courtney Chan (CMC; 200 free relay, 50 free, 100 fly) won three events each for the Athenas. Junior Carli Lessard (HMC; 1 and 3-meter dives), junior Stephanie Doi (CMC; 200 medley relay and 200 fly) and junior Emily McKinnon (CMC; 200 medley relay and 200 fly) were each victorious twice in the meet and there were three Athenas who won a single event in either a relay or individual event.
Next on the schedule for CMS is the UCLA Diving Invite on Jan. 15. Then on Jan. 16, CMS travels to Whittier to take on Whittier and Caltech in SCIAC competition.
