Joshua Kwon Leads CMS Men's Golf to Title at SCIAC No. 1

COSTA MESA, Calif. - Joshua Kwon had seven birdies and no bogeys to shoot a 65 in the second round of the first SCIAC regular season tournament, including a birdie on 18 to take individual medalist honors, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team took the team title by seven strokes over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at Costa Mesa Golf Course.

The Stags were down by six strokes after Saturday's first round, but shot -17 as a team on Sunday, compared to -4 for the teams that finished second, third and fourth. Kwon shot -3 on Saturday and -7 on Sunday to end with a 134 and win the individual title by one stroke over Yuki Bannai od Pomona-Pitzer.

CMS had three golfers in the top 10, as Adrian Chiu finished a close third with a -7, shooting a 67 on Sunday's second round, also with no bogeys. Kevin Jiang tied for fifth after shooting two rounds in the red, a -2 on Saturday and a -3 on Sunday. 

All five CMS golfers were in the red for the tournament, as Jamison Tan was -2 on the round after an even-par opening round to finish 13th overall. Yuefeng (Michael) Ma was also -2 on Sunday to end the tournament at -1 in 15th place. 

Kwon set the tone early on Sunday with birdies on the first two holes, and then took the turn at -5 after birdieing the eighth and ninth. He added a birdie on 12 and then was tied for the individual lead heading into the last hole, when he came up with his seventh birdie of the round. 

Chiu got hot in the middle of the round, picking up birdies at No. 4, No. 6 and No. 9 to take the turn at -3, and then added two more on the back nine. Kevin Jiang started his Sunday round with two birdies as well and added a birdie on the 18th after getting pars on every hole from No. 10-17. 

The Stags will be back in action on Monday, March 11 for the two-day Kingsmen Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran.
