CMS Men's Golf Opens Up Six-Shot Lead on Second Day of SCIAC Championships

VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team shot -5 as a team on the second day of the SCIAC Championships, opening up a six-shot lead on host Cal Lutheran on Monday at Olivas Links Golf Club.

CMS also maintains a 20-shot lead over Pomona-Pitzer in the aggregate race for the SCIAC title, which includes the four regular season rounds. The Sagehens were -9 on Monday to trim four shots off the CMS lead, but the Stags came in with a 10-shot advantage, and were 14 shots better than Pomona-Pitzer in Sunday's opening round. 

Vikram Chatterjee was -2 on Monday, his second straight 70, to stand in third place, two shots behind co-leaders Michael Ordona of La Verne and Neeraj Shetty of Whittier. Will Parker had a 71 on Monday and is in a tie for fourth place at -3, while Yuefeng (Michael) Ma was even par on Monday and stands in a tie for seventh place at -2. Kevin Jiang also had a strong effort with a -2 on Monday, vaulting up 13 spots into 23rd place overall. 

Chatterjee had a pristine round on Monday with no bogeys, picking up birdies on No. 13 and No. 18 (after starting on No. 10), and closing with nine straight pars. Parker nearly matched him, picking up just one bogey on No. 17, but he bounced back quickly with a birdie on No. 18, and then shot -1 on the back nine with a birdie on No. 4. 

Ma had a team-high five birdies on his round, closing out -3 on his final eight holes with birdies on No. 2, No. 4 and No. 7. Jiang had an eagle on the 14th hole, and added birdies on No. 15, No. 17 and No. 2 before finishing with a 70.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow for the third and final round of the SCIAC Championships, with the Stags teeing off beginning at 8:20 a.m.
