Michael Ma and CMS Men's Golf Maintain Leads after Second Day of SCIAC Championships

GolfStat Scoring

BEAUMONT, Calif. - Yuefeng (Michael) Ma shot a 70 to open a three-shot lead on the individual leaderboard, while helping the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team to a four-shot lead after the second of three rounds at the 2022 SCIAC Championships on Monday at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon.

CMS shot a 298 as a team on Monday as Redlands was able to trim three strokes off the seven-shot lead that the Stags had coming in after Sunday's opening round. CMS now leads by four strokes at this week's tournament, and 31 strokes overall over the first six rounds of SCIAC competition (including four regular season rounds, which are factored into the league championship).

Ma, meanwhile, came into the day in a three-way tie for first with John Williams of Whittier and Spencer Leader of Redlands, who each shot a 73 while Ma had a 70, the lowest round of the tournament so far on either day. Mason Chiu and Adrian Chiu are tied for fifth at +6, while Vijay Jain is also in a tie for 10th at 10-over.

The day began slowly for Ma, who had a double-bogey on the sixth hole to fall to +3 on the day, dropping out of the lead. However, he quickly shook it off with a birdie on the next hole, and finished -5 over the last 12 holes, with six birdies. He birdied the ninth and tenth on either side of the turn, and then picked up birdies on the 12th, 14th and 16th to finish his round at -2.

Ma stayed locked in all the way to the clubhouse, as both his tee shot on the par-three 17th and his approach shot on the par-four 18th left him 10-footers for birdie, but he settled for two closing pars and a three-shot lead.

Mason Chiu had a solid back nine, finishing even par to end up +3 on the day, while picking up birdies on the 11th and 13th. Adrian Chiu and Jain each had three birdies on the day as well.

The third and final round gets underway tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., as the Stags will try to maintain its four-shot lead over Redlands to win the SCIAC Tournament, and the 31-shot lead to earn the league championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
