CMS Men's Golf Ends 11th Out of 30 at Jekyll Island Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team tested itself against a field of some of the top Division III teams in the country and earned an 11th-place finish out of 30 at the Jekyll Island Invitational on Sunday.

The third and final round on Sunday saw CMS try to make a move into the top 10, but they ended up two shots out in 11th with an 869 (+5), after a 292 on the final round. Sewanee (-13) held off Methodist (-11), Emory (-10) and Huntingdon (-9) in a close battle for the team championship.

Mason Chiu was the top individual finisher for CMS in a tie for 17th place out of 150 golfers with a -3 over 54 holes. Chiu was +3 on the front nine on his final round, but regrouped at the turn with a strong finish, birdieing the 11th and 18th holes to get back into the top 20 with a -2 on the back nine. 

Kevin Jiang and Vijay Jain tied for the low round of the day for the Stags on Sunday with even-par 72s. Jiang had five birdies on the day, including one on 18 to get even for the round. Jain, meanwhile had 14 pars and two birdies, adding one on 18 as well. 

CMS will be back in action in three weeks, when it participates in the second SCIAC regular season tournament on April 9-10, the final tuneup before the league championships on Apr. 25-27.
