CMS Men's Golf Takes Lead After First Day of SCIAC No. 1

VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team had a solid performance on the opening day of SCIAC competition, taking a four-shot lead heading into tomorrow's second round of the first SCIAC regular season tournament of the 2022 season at Olivas Links.

CMS shot a 289 on the day, four shots better than the 293 from La Verne in second place, as the Stags battled some tough winds in the early going before settling in and coming away with the 18-hole lead. Pomona-Pitzer is third at 297, with Whittier and Redlands both tied with an even 300.

Kevin Jiang had the top individual round for the Stags with a one-under 71, just one shot behind Michael Ordona of La Verne on the individual leaderboard, as the two players were the only ones to come in with a red number.

Mason Chiu came in with an even-par 72 to tie for third with John Williams of Whittier and Seth Pope of Pomona-Pitzer, while Alex Yun and Vijay Jain each had 73s to give the Stags four players in strong contention for individual medalist honors going into tomorrow.

The second round will get underway tomorrow as CMS will try to pick up its third team championship in its first four events this season.
