JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. - Playing against a field of mostly Division I competitors, junior Will Parker finished in a tie for tenth out of 87 players at The Joust at Goose Creek, hosted by California Baptist on Monday and Tuesday.
Parker was consistent throughout his three rounds, which were played in difficult weather conditions, finishing with a 73-72-73 for a 218, just four shots behind individual medalist Brody Childs of Weber State. He had three birdies on his final round, including one on the eighth hole (his 16th of the day after starting at 11) to move into the top 10. He had at least two birdies in every round, including three in his first round on Monday.
As a team, the Stags finished 14th, as they returned to action after a four-month layoff with a tuneup before for the first SCIAC regular season tournament this weekend. The tuneup featured some tough competition that saw the top eight team finishers all coming from Division I programs. Weber State won by 10 strokes over Morehead State, with California Baptist, CSU Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara rounding out the top five.
Kevin Jiang was the second-best finisher for CMS in 44th place, concluding with a 74 today to end up 13-over for the three rounds. Mason Chiu had the lowest individual round for the Stags with a 70 in his first round on Monday, while Vijay Jain had an eagle in his second round.
CMS, which is ranked No. 5 in Division III entering the spring, will next head to SCIAC #1 on Saturday and Sunday, which will be held at Olivas Links in Ventura, the same course where the Stags ran away with the California State Intercollegiate Tournament in September with a school record score of 833 (-31) to win by 21 strokes.
