Two-for-Two! Stags Golf Takes First at Redlands to Win Both Fall Events

GolfStat Scoring

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team held off a late charge by Whitworth to capture the team championship of the Bulldog Fall Invitational, hosted by Redlands, by six strokes on Tuesday afternoon at the Redlands Country Club.

CMS finished with a team score of +3, after shooting -5 on its first round on Monday, +5 on its second round, and +3 in the final round on Tuesday. Whitworth shot a -6 as a team on Tuesday to close the gap, but the Stags held a comfortable lead throughout and settled for a six-stroke win.

It marks the second team championship for CMS in as many weeks, as the Stags opened the 2021-22 season with a commanding win at the California State Intercollegiate Tournament last week in Ventura, finishing with a school record -31 over three rounds.

Will Parker, who shot a 65 in his first round yesterday, shot even-par 70 today to finish at -3, good for a third-place finish on the individual leaderboard, after shooting -1 on the back nine with a birdie and eight pars. Yuefeng (Michael) Ma had a team-best 69 on Tuesday, on the heels of his 68 in the second round on Monday, to finish in the red at -2, tying for fourth place.

Vijay Jain also shot an even-par 70 on Tuesday, which moved him up to a top-10 finish at +4, tying for tenth place in the 64-golfer field. Kevin Jiang was the fourth scorer for CMS on Tuesday with a 74, as he finished in a tie for 19th place overall.

CMS will resume action in the spring season, after a successful fall which saw it pick up where it left off in the 2019-20 season. The Stags won three of their four events that year, capped off by a dominant win in the first SCIAC regular season tournament, before the spring was shut down by the pandemic. After the long layoff, CMS has now won five of the last six events it has competed in, dating back to the fall of 2019.
