Ken Kong Repeats as SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the second week in a row, sophomore Ken Kong has earned the SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week for events ending Sunday, April 7, the league office announced today.

Kong earned a first-place finish for the second straight tournament, winning SCIAC #2 at Industry Hills by four strokes with an even-par 142. On the second day on Sunday, Kong led CMS to a comeback team win as well, shooting a 70 (-1) to help the Stags win by three strokes over La Verne, after trailing the Leopards by eight after the first round.

Kong's 70 on Sunday also came on a day when nobody else in the field shot lower than a 73. With the team race tight down to the final hole, Kong came through with a birdie on the 18th, a hole which had given everyone problems all day, as nine of the 12 golfers from CMS and La Verne ended up with bogeys.

A week ago, Kong had a strong effort to win The West Cup by seven strokes to earn the first of his two straight SCIAC awards. Kong produced a 68 and a 69 on the second and third rounds, while the rest of the field combined had only one round under 70.

Kong and the Stags will be back in action in 10 days when they compete in the 2019 SCIAC Championships in Pasadena from April 18-20.
