CMS Men's Golf Stands in Second After First Day of SCIAC #2

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team is in second place behind La Verne after the first day of SCIAC Regular Season Championship No. 2 at Industry Hills Golf Course on Saturday.

The Stags finished the first day with a 297, placing them eight shots behind La Verne, which had a strong performance shooting +5 as a team. CMS is seven shots ahead of Chapman in third place, which shot a 309 on the day.

On the individual leaderboard, sophomore Ken Kong, who earned the SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week on Monday after winning the West Cup by seven strokes, is tied for third, one shot behind co-leaders Conner Davis and Hisham Hussein of La Verne.

Davis and Hussein each shot an even-par 71, as nobody in the field shot in the red on Saturday, while Kong, Jake Rosen of Cal Lutheran and Conor Rooney of Pomona-Pitzer were all one-over. La Verne had four of the top seven golfers in the field on Saturday, as Pitiluk Phanomchai was sixth at +2 and Nathan Stepanski was seventh at +3.

All five of the Stags competing for the team score were in the top 15, as senior Alex Wrenn, junior Austin Long and sophomore Mason Chiu were among the seven players who tied for eighth place with a 75 (+4). Freshman Alex Yun tied for 15th with a 76, although his score wasn't included in the team total as the fifth-place finisher for the Stags.

Day two of the SCIAC #2 regular season tournament gets underway tomorrow at noon, as the Stags will try to close the gap between themselves and La Verne.
