CMS Men's Golf in 10th (of 30) After First Day of Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team, ranked No. 4 nationally in Division III, finished at +8 after the first day of the Collegiate Invitational at the Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club, in tenth place but right in the thick of a crowded team leaderboard with two rounds still to go.

Illinois Wesleyan (ranked No. 3 in the nation) and LaGrange College (No. 17) both finished at even par to tie for first, with No. 1 Emory at +1 in third place, and No. 2 Huntingdon College close behind at +2 and in a tie for fourth place.

Senior Alex Wrenn was the top individual finisher for CMS on day one, finishing with a 73 (+1) which has him in a tie for 27th place overall. Wrenn began his day with a double bogey, but ended up with seven birdies on his round, including one on No. 18. 

In fact, three of the five Stags competing birdied No. 18 to give the team some momentum heading into tomorrow's second round. Junior Harrison Brenner closed out with two birdies on his final three holes to card a 74, while sophomore Mason Chiu birdied No. 17 and No. 18 to finish at 75. Freshman Alex Yun also finished with a 74, and sophomore Ken Kong was right behind with a 75. 

Three players tied for the individual lead after the first round with a 68 (-4), including two from North Carolina Wesleyan, Mariano Silvestri and Grady Anderson. Sam Rogers of LaGrange is also in a tie for first. 

The second round will get underway tomorrow morning, with the final round on Sunday.
